Checking out Sevilla

The city itself still bears many marks of its existence as a Roman settlement.  One of the historical sites that you may wish to see when you are in the city is the remnants of a Roman aqueduct, but it is fr from the only thing.  Also keep an eye out for large sections of the city wall, which retains many Moorish features from the time that the city remained under Moorish control.  One of the oldest and most picturesque neighborhoods in the city is the old Jewish quarter.  The Jewish quarter has long narrow streets that are lined with tall whitewashed buildings.  This is a wonderful place to see people still living in what seems to be an area that was taken right out of a book or  movie.

When you are looking for things to do in Sevilla, make sure that you consider the Sevilla Cathedral's with Giralda tower.  This is one of the few cathedrals in the city that has its private rooms open to the public, and you will be able to see the old tower that looks out over most of the old city.  Though there is a relatively high entrance fee, it turns out that the people who pay it feel that it is worth every penny!  The tower has a ramp instead of stairs; it was believed that at one point, people rode their horses right to the top!

If you have a taste for grand architecture, why not take a look at the Plaza de Espana?  Tile work covers every available surface and the sense of beauty and peace in this area is spectacular.  Look along the base of the bridges, where there is an image for each province that illustrates a major historical event.  The plaza is free and can be enjoyed by anyone who has a sense of curiosity.  Of course, when you want to see golden tiles, head over to the Torre del Oro, which is a tower from the thirteenth century.  The Torre del Oro hosts a maritime museum which is perfect for anyone who wants to explore Sevilla's ocean going past.

In the early evening women go to their flamenco lessons to learn the intricate steps, train their arms, wrists, and fingers to emote in dance the passionate energy that makes flamenco distinctively Spanish.   The lovely Spanish have the grace and the form to express feeling through this dance, known all over the world.  It is no mean feat to learn the dance; it is hard work and takes months of practice before one can perfect the flick of the wrist, the wanton movements of the fingers, and smoldering yet seductive poses. 

Before dusk bars and cafes open shop to welcome early stragglers ready to feast on tapas, an assortment of light dishes to whet one's appetite for the main course.   The tapas are the culinary pride and joy of the locals. Their home-prepared tapas may not be as sophisticated as those prepared in posh bars or restaurants but just the same these are just as delicious. 

Talk about sweets and the locals will show the way to the top pastry shops where the best flans and sweet breads are baked.  It is not unusual to see a long line of customers waiting for their turn to take home a pack of goodies.  You might as well get one too or miss a good thing about Seville's mouth-watering pastries.   

Late afternoon park picnics or leisurely strolls in the park are the people's favorite form of excursion to while away the time and to enjoy the cool late afternoon breeze.  As the evening draws in, the nightlife begins.  Tavernas come alive with sounds of laughter and music and the band play until the wee hours of the morning. It's dancing, singing and partying all night long.      

Take the city by bus, bike, taxi, or tram and enjoy the sights.  It's Seville and there is no other city like it.  Find romance and love and celebrate fiestas with the locals.  You heart will come alive during the long hot summers in Seville.
